These Ancient White Pines are no newcomers to living in a challenging world. Facing high winds and long bitter winters some choose to grow on the edge or even off the side of sheer vertical cliffs here in Lake Huron's Georgian Bay. Hundreds of years old they have grown strong by adapting to the elements. There are trees here just six inches tall and no bigger round than your index finger that have been found to be over three hundred years old.
The Ancient White Cedar teaches that time moves on and we must learn to adapt and embrace our changing culture and the evolving dynamics of our environment in order to create a valuable life experience and learn to not only survive but also to thrive.
Common throughout Northwestern Ontario, the eastern white cedar is most often associated with cool, moist, nutrient-rich sites, particularly on organic soils near streams or other drainage-ways, or on calcareous mineral soils. She commonly grows in association with balsam fir and tamarack in the boreal region.
